phancy.com rating:

phancy.com notes: Immaculate vibes, but not much else. If you're an Oz Perkins fan, you won't regret watching this for the visuals, but it's non-essential viewing. The cinematography is beautiful, and the framing does an excellent job of capturing the claustrophobia of being trapped in an enclosed space, however architectually interesting it is. Perkins really understands the feeling of trying to figure out if one is dreaming or not really well. However, the story is weak, and is mostly comprised of a large dump of exposition at the end. You could do worse than this movie, but you could also do better.

2 out of 4 stars - rogerebert.com

Near the end of its runtime, Osgood Perkins' "Keeper" suddenly remembers that it's a horror movie and unleashes the long-gestating frights it's been teasing at the periphery. That release might have felt like a genuine payoff if the minutes beforehand weren't such a circuitous slog. Instead, the final moments where Perkins lets his freak flag fly feel more like catharsis because finally, something interesting has happened.

Grade: C - Oz Perkins spends a long weekend in the woods with the forgettable ghost story Keeper

With as much clarity and as little satisfaction as Keeper‘s thin relationship themes-its ideas of literalized baggage, of entitlement, and of the dark potential of a (male) loved one's past-the script spells out its weirder elements as it races to the credits. But the two distinct yet familiar sides of Lepard's script, the fairy-tale fantasy and the mundane dating realism, never coalesce. The film becomes a bad date between the two, oil and water failing to connect over dinner and dessert. It's not scary, nothing awful or notable enough to memory-hole or gossip with your friends about later, but so thoroughly tedious that it never makes much of an impression in the first place.
